Created in partnership by National Dairy Council (NDC) and the National Football League (NFL), Fuel Up to Play 60 empowers youth to take action to improve nutrition and physical activity at their school and for their own health.
The obesity crisis did not happen overnight and neither will its solution. But small, positive steps toward nutrient-rich food choices and increased physical activity can have a big impact in the long term. Fuel Up to Play 60 is a program of NFL PLAY 60, the NFL's campaign to get kids active for 60 minutes a day to tackle childhood obesity. Fuel Up to Play 60 is built around the notion that combining positive nutrition and physical activity education can motivate youth to make healthier choices. Fuel Up to Play 60 was designed to be customizable and nonprescriptive - allowing youth and schools to determine which tools and resources will best meet youth wellness goals and each school's wellness policies.
The ultimate goal is to ensure changes made at school are sustainable so children have more opportunities to be physically active and to eat nutrient-rich foods like low-fat and fat-free milk, fruit, whole grains and vegetables throughout the school campus.
The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) has joined this effort. Its involvement and educational resources also maximize reach and impact for the program. Fuel Up to Play 60 is funded with an initial private-sector financial commitment of $250 million over five years by America's Dairy Farmers. Funding is expected to grow as government, business, communities and families join this effort. More than 60,000 - or 60 percent - of the nation's 96,000 private and public schools are currently enrolled in Fuel Up to Play 60.
