Breakfast Picnic

Set up an inviting breakfast picnic area that students can visit before school or between periods. Choose a convenient location and offer nutritious and tasty choices that encourage students to make healthy choices throughout the day.

How Does It Work?

  • This is a strategy you can try once a month, or once a week, to get students more aware of breakfast options.

The following steps are suggestions for how to complete the Play — but they can be done in any order or combination and can be altered to fit your needs. If you find ways to adapt this Play to fit your school, share it with us through the Tips section!

Huddle Up

Huddle Up

  • Huddle up with your school nutrition professionals to help plan your picnic options and your principal and other school administrators to give your plans a thumbs up and help choose a location outside the cafeteria for your picnic.

Consider locations that are convenient for everyone and have a wide open area, such as a lobby, outside the gym, outside the front doors, a courtyard or an area of the lawn. Discuss what time(s) of day your picnic will be available. Before school? Mid-morning?

Build Awareness

Build Awareness

  • Solicit donations of food, picnic tables, paper goods and more from local businesses. Also consider asking local community organizations and parent groups to help staff your picnic. Use the Tools and Resources below to help you plan.

Take Action

Take Action

  • Work with your school nutrition professionals to create a menu of nutrient-rich breakfast food choices. Offer conveniently packed and easy-to-grab foods that include nutrient-rich selections from the five food groups, especially fruits, vegetables, whole grains and low-fat or fat-free dairy foods.

Spread the Word

Spread the Word

  • Spread the word about the Breakfast Picnic. Create posters to put up in high-traffic areas, distribute flyers in classrooms, make morning announcements and advertise your program in the school newsletter. Encourage everyone at your school to make healthy eating choices in the morning — every morning.
