2016 Black Hawk 100 Mile Club Kick Off

Black Hawk Elementary school kicked off their third season of 100 Mile Club on Wednesday, Sept. 7, 2016. All students and staff walked, jogged, or ran their first mile for the season. Last year we logged over 39,000 miles in the New Balance Billion Mile Race. We are trying to beat our record this year. We invited members of the Black Hills Runners Club to run with us. This organization donated $1,750 to our club to make it even better. We also had Donna Robinson, our FUTP60 coach, to speak about eating right, getting moving, and making a difference every day. In the month of September the Rapid City School District, Elementary Physical Education Teachers will host three cross country meets in which our 4th and 5th grade students participated to earn even more miles.

How do you plan to make this Play last during the school year and beyond?

We have a schedule for running for the entire year. We will have family walk, jog and runs on Monday and Friday mornings. Kids will also be able to choose to run at recess (10 minutes = 1 mile). Kids are also encouraged to try some 1K-5K events outside of school times. Classroom teachers help log miles. I also have some parent volunteers helping with tracking.

How did students and adults work together as a team?

We all ran together that day. Teachers and staff encouraged kids on the track. Teachers also help with the organization end of the program. My older 5th grade students dressed up like our mascot to encourage kids.

What improvements have you seen at your school?

Happy and Healthier kids that are excited about running. We have to stop them from running more laps in the AM. It is a great problem to have to solve.
