30 Minute Run Challenge

Three years ago, as part of the Fuel Up to Play 60 Get Fit program, all Carrollton-Farmers Branch Elementary schools began to diligently train for a 30 minute steady state jog with all students Kindergarten – 5th Grade. Recently, McCoy Elementary had an 82% success rate from Kindergarten – Fourth Grade. Jennifer Sharp, McCoy physical education teacher, is pictured below with some of her students who successfully completed the 30 minute run challenge for cardiovascular endurance.

How did students and adults work together as a team?

Students and teachers worked together to accomplish the cardiovascular endurance run by coming to physical education class regularly and “building up run time” over the first semester, starting out at just 3 minutes and moving to 5 and then 10 and so on. Students ran side by side so that they could pace themselves without “running out of energy”. When the actual challenge day came, they were excited and many people from administration came to watch their successes.
