5 Minute Workout For 5th Graders

We held our Fuel up To Play 60 Team Meetings after school. In order to shake them up a bit and before we go down to business, we did a physically active meeting warm up activity like a dance off, sports charades, or simple exercises and stretches . It was fun and made it easier for them to sit down and get to the work of planning our Fit Week. We used the same philosophy when we planned our 5 Minute Workout for 5th Graders Event at the school. The 5th Grade class assembles in the Dining Commons some mornings before going to their classrooms. Our Fuel Up To Play 60 Team stepped up on the stage and lead them all in a stretching and cardio work out for five minutes before they went to class. It woke them up and got their blood pumping to their brains before starting their academic day.

What challenges did you face and how did you overcome them?

We have one of the only open concept schools remaining in the country. We do not have walls, so it is too distracting to do In-Class Activity Breaks. Doing simple exercises and stretches in a large group before class started was our compromise.

What improvements have you seen at your school?

There are several teachers who have their students quietly stretch and walk the hallways before they sit down for testing.

How did students and adults work together as a team?

The student team practiced the stretches and exercises. Our Vice Principal called out the exercises for everyone to follow along.
