The West PE Department held the second annual 9/11 Memorial Bleacher Climb. This event is held to honor the 343 Firefighters of the New York Fire Department who paid the ultimate sacrifice at the World Trade Center on September 11th, 2001. This year’s Climb was  held in Del Marcel Stadium on Monday, September 11th during all periods of the day. During period 3, we had a moment of silence to honor those that were lost on that day. At approximately at 9:45, Mr.Viste and the chamber orchestra played a moving rendition of “ America.” West students climbed the bleachers 11 times...only 1/10 of the equivalent of the 110 stories what the heroic firefighters did 16 years ago in the World Trade Center. To honor this anniversary, local firefighters from Green Bay Station #3 were here from 9:40-10:40. They brought a fire truck, firefighter gear, and some joined in the climb. Students were able to try on gear and climb steps to gain an appreciation of the weight and heat factors that are involved in a firefighter's day-to-day work. Through firefighter and community participation we can ensure that firefighters are honored and that the world knows that we will never forget the impact of 9/11.

How did students and adults work together as a team?

Green Bay West PE students, Marines, Firefighters, EMS, Teachers, Fuel Up to Play 60 group, and Green Bay Police Dept. climbed the bleachers 11 times...only 1/10 of the equivalent of the 110 stories what the heroic firefighters did 16 years ago in the World Trade Center

How did you accomplish your goals?

We utilized our new IHT heart rate monitors to make sure students stayed in the Yellow Zone or between 150-190 heart beats.

What improvements have you seen at your school?

It was wonderful to get media coverage of my school and students in a positive way!
