Students walked the equivalent of 78 flights of stairs on our bleachers to recognize the FDNY firefighters who lost their lives in the 9/11 tragedy. They walked up 78 flights of stairs because that is as high as the firefighters made it before the towers collapsed. Each student climbed in remembrance of one firefighter. After they climbed they wrote a message on their wall at firehero.org. The students gained physical activity time, but also climbed to "never forget", which is powerful sense. Most students now were not born at the time of 9/11.

How do you plan to make this Play last during the school year and beyond?

We planned this play around 9/11. This year 9/11 fell on a Sunday, so we did our climb on the following Monday and Tuesday. Future goals would be to walk this as an entire school.

How did you accomplish your goals?

We accomplished our goals as a class and encouraged others to finish. I even had students reminding others of why we were climbing and what it means to support fallen heroes.
