A Little School a BIG Dedication

Miranda Morey,   Wells Village School
Access to Healthy Foods, Community Involvement, Success with Funds,  Teamwork

This year the Wells Village school was granted a grant for the new Farm to School Program that was implemented in the beginning of the year. The kids were all excited after they found out not only did we receive a large sum of money for this program but they get to have their very own garden box per class. The farm to school coordinator has been going to the class rooms teaching them about different fruits and vegetables and doing experiments to get them ready for the upcoming ground breaking for the garden boxes in May. We are happy to announce that the community and our local farms are all partnering up to help build these boxes as well as our local food bank to help bring healthy food to not only our school but to the community and needy as well.

What improvements have you seen at your school?

The kids are more engaging when it comes to new fruits and vegetables on the salad bar, as well as excited to grow the seedlings in their classrooms. I have heard from many teachers and parents that the students talk about how things grow and such about their class room vegetables.

How did students and adults work together as a team?

They all worked together to pick out each vegetable or fruit that they wanted to grow as well as do sun experiments and research about each one.

How do you plan to make this Play last during the school year and beyond?

We have also received other grants for this farm to school program that will help fund the garden boxes for the next two years. The students are excited to have the responsibility to grow their own food and to share it with the community.
