Community Involvement, Physical Activity Participation, Teamwork
I am the physical education teacher at a high poverty elementary school. One of our feeder pattern high schools sent some cheerleaders and football players to our school to help kick-off Fuel Up To Play 60 and also encourage our students to life a healthy and positive lifestyle. The football players loved our kids and were able to play basketball and throw the football with the students. The cheerleaders danced with our girls and also taught them several cheers. Our students had a blast and will hopefully remember the encouraging words and actions these high school students showed them.
What improvements have you seen at your school?
Our students were encouraged by the cheerleaders and football players so much that they have been practicing the cheers they learned and throwing the football every day during PE.
How do you plan to make this Play last during the school year and beyond?
I plan on allowing the students to continue to grow in the areas of interest, such as football and cheerleading. I also plan on asking our feeder pattern high school to send students that play different sports. This way our students have a wide variety of sports in which to be interested.
What challenges did you face and how did you overcome them?
I faced the challenge of students who have no interest in football and cheerleading. My plan is to have students and other adult athletes from other sports come out to our school to provide information and show our students the different sports to play in our area.
