Let's Move Active Schools National Winner

Last spring, we were selected as one of the handful of schools in Texas and around the country to receive the 'Active Schools National Award'.

How did students and adults work together as a team?

For the last two years, we have held a community health fair here at McAuliffe that involves parents, teachers, students, etc. and it has been a big hit. We bring in local vendors to promote healthy products and practices. We also host a Mission Impossible tournament for teams of ten. Teams can be made up from anyone of any age.

How did you accomplish your goals?

One of the main ideas of the AS Award is to not only currently meet several of their requirements but to also show progress towards the ones that you don't meet. We have worked hard this year to accomplish the 2-3 final checkpoints and hopefully earn the award again next year. The award is a two year award.

What challenges did you face and how did you overcome them?

One of the checkpoints is minutes of physical activity in a week. We have had teachers mix in more brain breaks and sometimes an extra organized recess to help get us closer to this goal.
