Active Science

Along with participating in Fuel Up to Play 60, we have also began an Active Science Program. Active Science enhances youth physical activity and educational achievement at the Y. We have 25 children that wear a pedometer for 30 minutes of active play. Then the children log their stats on a Kindle Fire and complete a lesson. Children interact with each other during a variety of STEM experiences and fun technology. They compete nationwide with other Y's and after school programs. Out of the 7 choices of programs, Pentucket Lake YMCA B/A school program, is #1 in Fitness Frenzy out of 47 Programs across the country. We are now in our 3rd category and the children are loving it! 1 YMCA of the North Shore - Haverhill: Pentucket Lake School 51400 2 Merrimack Valley YMCA - Arlington School 49750 4 Merrimack Valley YMCA - Leahy School 32900 6 YMCA - Demo - Merrimack College 14950 7 Phila. How did you accomplish your goals?

By encouraging healthy competition, teamwork and good sportsmanship. The children team up with each other by wearing the pedometer and compete with each other to see who can be more active.

How did students and adults work together as a team?

They all had a lot of fun challenging each other. My kiddos are FANTASTIC!

What challenges did you face and how did you overcome them?

The program is geared towards the older children and the younger children wanted to participate. The technology made it hard for the younger ones to read/understand the vocabulary and lessons. The older children assisted them with their lessons.
