After-School Open Gym

Laura Kreinus,   Greenland El
Physical Activity Participation, Success with Funds,  Teamwork
Our elementary school hosted 4 after-school open gyms in April and May for grades K through 4. We had nearly 100 kids participate and many more excited for next year's program! Kids ran, jumped, played, laughed and worked as a team in a variety of games. It also helped spread the word of our program to teachers, parents and the community.

What challenges did you face and how did you overcome them?

Spreading the word was a challenge. When promoting the event to adults the message seemed lost in the noise. We went to the kids in class and explained it to them. They were excited and we sent each home with a small flier which they gave to their parents. The kids became our promoters and enrollment skyrocketed!

How do you plan to make this Play last during the school year and beyond?

This Play will become a yearly event in our school - mainly in the winear when our kids have excess energy due to cold temps.

How did students and adults work together as a team?

Students helped us during the gyms choose which activities worked best for each age group. Next year we plan to involve them beforehand to choose their favorite gym games so all are happy and familiar with them!
