60 Minute After School Intramural Activities for 4th & 5th grade students.  We started this "play" program last year and continued our after school team sports on Tuesdays (girls) & Thursdays (boys). We had so many boys sign up for basketball that we added a Wednesday group. We have two other teachers that volunteer to help implement this program. We just finished soccer and will start basketball after the Thanksgiving break, then in the Spring we'll have team handball and wrap it up with outdoor education. With the help of parent volunteers his past summer, we even took some students hiking and kayaking. We came up with a Physical Activity Play, our principal gave it a thumbs up, and we sent out information in Wednesday Folders. We created sign up and permission sheets and contacted parents. Last year, each team activity lasted 6 weeks and this year we increased play time to 7 weeks. I have chosen “intramurals” instead of a running club, to add a variety of activities instead of just one.

How do you plan to make this Play last during the school year and beyond?

We had positive input from students and parents, so we continued the Physical Activity Play this year. We have had more students sign up this year and added one more afternoon to the program. This is a free program and we increased each sport activity from 6 weeks to 7 weeks. The future of this program looks promising.
