Students at Timber Creek have the opportunity to participate in the Morning Mile program. The program is open to all students in Kindergarten - 5th grade. Research shows that students are better prepared to learn when their day begins with exercise. We have about 215 walkers/runners that start their day at 7:15 each morning. They walk/jog laps while socializing with friends, each morning they choose to participate. Students earn running charms for each 10 miles they complete and families have the ability to track student progress from their computers. 100 mile hoodies are also rewarded to students reaching that goal.
The benefits of this program include:
* Exercise helps to prevent childhood obesity, high cholesterol, diabetes, and other
* Students expend youthful energy and go to class ready to learn.
* Students gain self confidence while getting more fit.
* Students develop a dedication to a healthy lifestyle.
Family members are welcome to run with their child(red) and our local high school cross country team joins us sometimes as well, bringing in community support. This program is a win-win for our students.
What improvements have you seen at your school?
Students are more prepared for class on days they come to run. They also have the opportunity to get to know their peers.
How did students and adults work together as a team?
Parent volunteers help with bulletin board needs, as well as out assisting students when needed. We also have amazing staff members who help. Our administration supports the program and assures we have the tools we need to be successful.
