Annual Smoothie Tradition at Curtisville
At Curtisville Primary Center in Pennsylvania, Physical Education Teacher and District Wellness Director Ron Nichols teams up with Food Service Director Joe Beaman to give every kid at the school a free smoothie on the last day of school. This was the second year in a row that these two have been doing this, and it is now an every-year tradition. Smoothies have been added to the menu weekly at Curtisville since funds were received in the 2016-17 school year for a new blender from Fuel Up to Play 60! This day, we served over 300 smoothies using only: low fat milk, local yogurt and U.S. grown strawberries and blueberries. Cheers!

How did students and adults work together as a team?

Mr. Nichols and Mr. Beaman both use the last student day of the year to promote their fresh-fruit smoothies. Principal Jen Cavalancia supports their efforts.

How did you accomplish your goals?

We had more than ten new students try a smoothie for their first time ever!

How do you plan to make this Play last during the school year and beyond?

This is a new yearly tradition aimed at sending the kids home for the summer thinking about fresh, good food.
