Apple Tasting

Our school was able to host an Michigan Apple Taste Testing for our Middle School students. We received 3 different types of apples (Jonagold, Fuji, and Gala) from a local farm and our Middle School students were able to taste all three at lunch. Going into the event I wasn't sure how the students would react to tasting a simple apple. Each student was given one slice of each of the 3 different types. The students loved it! They were asking for seconds, thirds, and fourths of the different kinds. Many students commented that they wished our food service would get apples that tasted as good as apples they were tasting (they only serve Red Delicious). Students were asking questions about which type of apple they were tasting and repeating the name over and over to remember to tell their parents. We also had apples left over that we didn't cut and I was able to use those apples as prizes in the gym for winning games. It is amazing how hard a student will work for a simple, fresh apple!

How did you accomplish your goals?

I think that our goal of exposing our students to different types of apples was reached. Students were excited to eat the apples and were asking for weeks following the event if I had more apples.
