As a school where 93% of students are labeled as economically disadvantaged, it can be difficult to ensure that our students are exposed to and are consuming healthy snacks and meals within their daily lives. In order to help combat this issue and spread nutritional awareness, Program Advisors and students at Audie Murphy Middle School collaborated with the Pharr-San Juan-Alamo Independent School District’s nutritionist to host a smoothie-making class and smoothie taste test. Students were guided by advisors in promoting the event by creating bulletin boards packed with nutritional information, displayed decorative posters in the hallway to spread event awareness, and made daily announcements to recruit student attendance. The district nutritionist provided students with three recipes and lead students in a lesson on the nutritional benefits of each smoothie. After having instructed them, students were taught how to prepare and make them, and were given each of the three smoothies to try and rate in successive rounds. Students “graded” each smoothie based on color, taste, and texture, ultimately ranking their favorite smoothies. With recipes in hand at the end of the event, students were informed and ready to walk away with some newly acquired knowledge and a brand new skill: the ability to make delicious and nutrient-packed smoothies to have at home as an alternate treat to the unhealthy foods popular within most families across south Texas.
How did students and adults work together as a team?
Students and advisors were able to create eye-catching bulletin boards that were loaded with nutritional information regarding the benefits of smoothies, created, decorative posters in the hallway with the Fuel Up to Play 60 logo that invited students to the event, and had kids who are associated with the initiative read an announcement for the event each day, inviting students to wear their favorite NFL jersey to the smoothie class/taste test.
