Avocado Smoothies Taste Test

The Hortonville Elementary team leaders mixed up over 500 avocado smoothie samples during lunch time!! This was so much fun to show students that avocados are not only a healthy choice but they can be great in a smoothie!! The smoothie was a beautiful shade of green but that didn’t stop our students from taking a try to see what they thought. And they loved them!! Some even begged for another sample  The recipe for this delicious smoothie is avocado, pineapple chunks, low-fat vanilla yogurt and orange juice. Add this to your blender and mix!!

What challenges did you face and how did you overcome them?

Students were a little apprehensive to try the smoothie because of the GREEN color. My team members were the first to try them and they truly loved them. They would carry a smoothie sample around to those students who were a little shy to taste one. After they saw how their friends reacted, they would try it and they too would be excited because they liked it.

How did students and adults work together as a team?

I had shifts of student team members who had jobs so that everyone had something to do. Some kids were selected to be at the table and they were the ones who wore the aprons. Their job was to arrange the cups on the trays and to pour the mixture into the cups. Another job was the servers. They were the ones who handed out the samples. The last job was a sticker person. This person walked around and handed out stickers to all the students who helped.

How do you plan to make this Play last during the school year and beyond?

My student leaders would like to do more smoothie challenges through out the school year. Our only problem would be funding. So, my leaders typed up a letter to distribute to the local businesses asking for donations. The letter requested either a cash donation or food items from the list on the sheet. We have received several area businesses who have donated food items.
