Access to Healthy Foods, Community Involvement, Physical Activity Participation, Student Leadership, Success with Funds
At Bartram High School, we have created the first Teen Wellness Center in the School District of Philadelphia. This center is a place for healthy eating, healthy cooking, exercise programs, meditation, gardening and yoga activities. This center is an oasis among the challenges and problems encountered by students in the community. Students can get peer mentoring and help with issues like bullying. Students can have fun while learning from each other.
How did you accomplish your goals?
First, we made ads and did PDAs to announce the opening of our Teen Wellness Center. We had a grand opening day in January after a local company came and refurbished the room to make it more comfortable for students with new furniture, small exercise equipment and a library of health related books. Many students have had access to technology in the room and lots of healthy fresh snack items to rejuvenate students' minds and bodies.
What challenges did you face and how did you overcome them?
Some students try to get into the center without permission. We have decided that all students must become a member of the Wellness Center in order to be admitted. Admission is free, and students must follow the rules set up by students themselves to run the center effectively.
