Access to Healthy Foods, Student Leadership, Success with Funds, Teamwork
The Green Thumb Initiative (GTI) of the Rochester Alternative Learning Center is a program designed with experiential learners in mind. Our goal is to meet standards and build skills through establishing a school garden. To promote healthy eating and sustainable living in our school, our students became beekeepers. They have spent the past year researching honeybees, preparing hives, introducing honeybees to them, maintaining them, and finally, harvesting the honey and hosting a taste test.
How did you accomplish your goals?
We accomplished our goals by making sure that every step we took and decision we made was rooted in solid research and education.
How do you plan to make this Play last during the school year and beyond?
We plan to extend this play beyond this school year by evaluating what we’ve done and applying that knowledge to the future, in order to support our bees, make them happy and healthy, and to make more honey.
