Ben Johnson Students Get Fit

DJ Riggs,   Ben Johnson Elementary School
Access to Healthy Foods, Community Involvement, Physical Activity Participation, Student Leadership, Success with Funds,  Teamwork
We have found many successes within our FUTP 60 Program. We have received the grant for the second year, which has given us the resources to lead and make changes in our school health and wellness. Another success is that former UK and Detroit Lions football player, Artose Pinner, came and spoke to our school about health and wellness and read his book, Willville, to several classes. We also got to arrange for him to not only visit our school, but all elementary schools in the district. One more big success for us is that we used FUTP 60 as the basis of our BJES Get Fit STLP team. We did exceptionally well last year. We scored best in group and were in the top 20 STLP schools in the state of Kentucky.

What improvements have you seen at your school?

We have seen a larger variety in food options with the introduction of breakfast smoothies. We have also seen an increase in physical activity opportunities whether it be an additional wellness special area, before and after school physical activity, or brain breaks in the regular classroom.
