Benfer Bobcat Boot Camp
We have continued a Matzke Elementary tradition at our new school Benfer Elementary School by starting a Boot Camp for all students in grades 2-5. We meet one day a week for an hour at a time and go extreme on exercise! Health and nutrition lessons are also part of the program and our first smoothie tasting is coming up soon!

What improvements have you seen at your school?

When we first started our school Boot Camp, students were excited, but not prepared for what we had in store for them. The results have been fantastic. They are building up endurance and learning about health and nutrition once a week (sometimes twice) for an hour each session. Our smoothie session is coming up after the holidays and the kids are all looking forward to it!

How did students and adults work together as a team?

We have two PE teachers working with around 45 students for a one-hour session. They have to be dropped off early at school so we have to get parents involved as well. The kids who show up are given an extra hard workout session and something new to do and learn every day. Many of our students bring these lessons/ exercises home to their parents or siblings to share. They also share with their peers who are not yet in our program. It has been a success!

How did you accomplish your goals?

We have accomplished some of our goals, but the program is only just starting up! We plan on doing Boot Camp every year and are also looking to bring it to the district and a summer school option. By spreading the word on great, new exercises as well as healthy eating and nutrition, it makes this program a great addition to our new school
