Access to Healthy Foods

At Black Hawk Elementary, we are really starting to turn the corner in relation to Health and Wellness. We achieved Touchdown status last year and are looking to continue the cycle. Our Wellness Team has been fighting for a salad bar for the last year and a half. We just received conformation we will receive one this week. We are going to start slowly with upper levels and eventually move to K, 1 and 2.

How did students and adults work together as a team?

Wellness Club: We have a club that meets once a month. One of our goals is to recruit others to join our club.

What challenges did you face and how did you overcome them?

Student Ambassador/Wellness Club: During that time we get on our laptops or iPads and log on to the website. We talk about the challenges they take, the mini lesson they complete and also our healthy/physical activity plays we are currently doing.

How do you plan to make this Play last during the school year and beyond?

We conducted a smoothie taste test in November. The kids loved it! We did this with the intention of hopefully getting smoothies added to our breakfast menu next school year. We will keep you posted!
