Black Hills Runners Club Grant

Black Hawk Elementary school has teamed up with a local running group called The Black Hills Runners Club. This has been a three year partnership. They have provided guest speakers at our end of the year assembly, spent time running with our kids at our Fall kick off, and donated money to sponsor students to get a 100 Mile Club incentive package, which includes a T-shirt, pencil, wristband, and gold medal. This year, we have been promoting the character qualities of this program by selecting students on a monthly basis. We honored the most industrious student in January and the student with the most Team Spirit in February. We will pick new character qualities in March and April.

How did students and adults work together as a team?

Students must honestly report their miles to their classroom teachers. We do morning runs on Mondays and Fridays, after which they collect sticks to show teachers. Kids can also run at recess. They must walk, jog, or run the entire recess and honestly report to the teacher who marks them down on a chart.

How do you plan to make this Play last during the school year and beyond?

We are in year three. We have teamed up with a local running club. 100 Mile Club has become a tradition at our school.

What improvements have you seen at your school?

Kids that are normally not very active at recess are moving more.
