Blackburn Basketballers

As Blackburn is considered a program and not a school, we don't have after/evening sports available for our students. But Coach Theo Peters, who is our Head of Security, has made a way for our Blackburn male youth to play basketball in the community! The boys have regular practices, wonderful role modeling, constant mentoring conversations, and ample opportunity to succeed! In fact, they are now taking part in local and regional events and college scouts are watching them! Hats off to Coach Theo and our Blackburn Basketballers!

How did students and adults work together as a team?

Our students have to earn the opportunity to participate on the basketball team. Their success is monitored pertaining to their Academics, Behaviors, and Credits. They take part in pre-teaching, and review of appropriate options for being successful with their A, B, C's!

How did you accomplish your goals?

Coach Theo spends lots of time making connections in the community and bringing on solid coaches to help the boys excel at basketball, but more importantly, mature into being successful men on and off the court!

What challenges did you face and how did you overcome them?

As Blackburn is an Alternative Program, many of our students have community struggles that can hold them back from reaching their full potential. Cycles of negative things and events often become too much to bear. But this amazing opportunity that is continually offered to our male youth, by Coach Theo and his team of role models, has made a way! Where life seemed to offer hopelessness, there now is hope!
