Access to Healthy Foods, Student Leadership, Success with Funds
Our nutritional goal is to emphasize the importance of eating fresh foods that come from our gardens and making healthy choices in what we eat. We hope that our mobile cooking cart will allow classroom teachers to utilize the cart to allow students to taste test different foods harvested in our school garden, along with other healthy foods.
Our school has a Garden Club consisting of 20-30 students ranging from K-4th grade. Students have transplanted foods grown inside our school out to our school garden. They observe the plants weekly (they meet every Wednesday) and journal their progress. They taste different foods that have been harvested already and really get excited about what they're learning. Our garden has changed our whole school environment in a healthy, positive way!
How do you plan to make this Play last during the school year and beyond?
Our school garden will continue each year, thanks to the Funding from FUTP 60, which has given us a good start. Our community is getting involved, also, which allows more opportunities for us. The response from our students is motivating others to get involved. Our plants that have been started this spring will be maintained by our summer school program and then continue at the start of next year. Students cannot wait to see our garden's growth next year!
