Blessings in a Backpack Beginning to Fuel up Our Community

Fuel up to Play 60 is working to score a touchdown and make Hichborn Middle School students the winners by spreading the word about Blessings in a Backpack. Program Advisor Katie Glidden researched, gained administrative permission, and created contacts with private sponsors to connect to the local food cupboard and a statewide distributor of food to area food cupboards. Students have made posters and will encourage their classmates to make the winning catch of a backpack of food to take home before April vacation. With this first touchdown we are hoping to bless students to more and more passes in the future so no one is home hungry.

How do you plan to make this Play last during the school year and beyond?

We will make donations to the Lincoln Regional Food Cupboard and they will supply the food in coordination with the Good Shephard Food Bank, a statewide program. The Penobscot Valley High School National Honor Society collected over $100 this past fall that will be combined with private donations for this year’s food. We plan to have another distribution before summer then publicize our program, write grants, and approach the community and businesses for further donations for next year.
