Conner has been attending workshops in collaboration with the AZ Dairy Council to learn about the importance of dairy in our diets. He came to me and asked to present information on the importance of breakfast to my first year Culinary Arts classes.

How do you plan to make this Play last during the school year and beyond?

We talked to the students about a breakfast lab where we can make some of these ideas and see what tastes the best, how easy they are to make, etc. They were assigned to bring in recipes. We will collaborate as teams, create grocery lists, etc. We will also make our next lab a breakfast lab so students can see how easy it is to get these foods into their daily routine.

What challenges did you face and how did you overcome them?

The presentations were meant for a 50-minute class period and his first presentation was only 25 minutes. After his first presentation, he and I talked about how to make it more interactive and longer to fill the time frame. The next time he presented, the kids were more involved, and interacted more positively with the material presented. It also turned it into a 40-minute presentation, which allowed me to throw in some extra information at the end.

How did you accomplish your goals?

We wanted kids to think more about what went into their current breakfast and figure out ways to more easily have a balanced meal. There were some interesting discussions on ways to include all the food groups into easy grab and go meals.
