Breakfast Counts at Southside
We received some funding and purchased Fuel Up to Play 60 aprons for our little chefs to wear during Family and Consumer Science Class. We thought having the Fuel Up to Play 60 logo on the aprons would be a great way to promote the program on a day-to-day basis. They have all been working with the FUTP 60 website/dashboard and spreading the word about what they learn to their friends. They have been working on breakfast all year and one of the biggest impacts has been that by learning how to select, prepare and cook healthy breakfast options, they all are more willing to try new foods. It has been quite empowering for them to take charge of their nutrition. (This has impacted over 200 students this year)

What improvements have you seen at your school?

The biggest improvement is that more students are eating breakfast each and every morning. Students are also learning that breakfast is the time of day not a type of food. Students are eating vegetables in the morning along with fruit, grains, dairy, and protein. They are learning that its really important to start your day with a balanced meal.

How do you plan to make this Play last during the school year and beyond?

The current group of students have been recruiting younger students and siblings to join the group. My students are inspiring others to carry on the message for next year.
