Breakfast in the Classroom at Charlotte Middle

Deb Dillon,   Charlotte Middle School
Breakfast For Everyone — First Meal Matters
Access to Healthy Foods
Charlotte Middle School recognized that "Breakfast for Everyone - First Meal Matters" can have a positive impact in the classrooms. Only 51 students on average participated in school breakfast out of the 375 students attending the school. In order for breakfast to be provided in the classroom, CMS had to change the class schedule for the year to provide adequate time for all students to eat. CMS did this by moving their "Enrichment" class to the beginning of the day and adding seven minutes to first hour to provide the extra time to eat breakfast and to give access to breakfast in the classroom for all students.

How did you accomplish your goals?

We worked with our school's food service director during the planning phase to determine if breakfast in the classroom was a realistic idea and if there were enough resources (staffing and supplies) to carry out the Play. Breakfast bags were purchased in order to transport breakfast to the classrooms.
