Breakfast Obstacles
We had the hardest time with teacher resistance. The didn't like the dirty shoes, the smelly kids, the messy breakfast brought to classrooms. It got so bad that teachers were not letting kids come to the club in the morning. After surveying the teachers, I purchased a mat for shoe dirt and made kids cool down and march to pound it away. To tackle smelly runners, we talked about hygiene and bring in an extra shirt to change into. To battle the mess, the Café started packing healthier and less messy choices for grab and go breakfast. Administration handled any teacher negativity after we made proactive change based on the first school survey.

What improvements have you seen at your school?

Kids come and run with our Marathon Kids incentives cold or hot weather. They even beg to run in the rain but I have to put my foot down sometimes. The pic above is one of my dedicated crew that still came out on a 43 degree morning. I had scarves and gloves and hats saved up for just such an occasion. Scarf tying was the highlight of my season and a day I know they still laugh about.
