Access to Healthy Foods
Living in the frozen Tundra of Fargo, ND, buses and parents are not always running on time. Many students rely on breakfast at school to get their meal for the day. We have a lot of students who eat breakfast but a very limited amount of time to get students through the line. We started a grab and go breakfast program, this program is offered to students who arrive a little late to school but still need food. It is also offered to students in early morning choir/orchestra, allowing students to participate in extra curricular programs and get food. The grab and go lunch is something quick and easy in a bag that the students may take up to class and eat at the beginning of the day.

What improvements have you seen at your school?

Students are more focused and ready to go. We see fewer behavioral issues due to a basic need being met. It is a simple option that allows students to get food, which is a very basic need.

How did students and adults work together as a team?

The staff has had to be flexible and allow students to eat breakfast up in the classroom and possibly be a little late getting up to the room. Students know that they just need to ask and their needs will be met.

How did you accomplish your goals?

We worked with out school nutrition team to come up with a meal/meals that we could put in bags and students could get quickly and easily. It took collaboration and working together to pull this goal together.
