At Ivey Lane Elementary, a Title 1 school in Pine Hills, Florida, resources and opportunities for physical activity are few and far in between. With the Fuel Up to Play 60 grant, we were provided with equipment, curriculum, and training from Spark and we were able to bring the fun to the students in their classrooms. The Physical Education coaches dropped by each grade level and class and provided a much needed break through indoor recess, giving the students a chance to rest their brains and shake off a long day of sitting with some physical activity. Whether it was through the use of music, hula hoops, speed stacks, jump ropes, bean bags, balls, we found new and exciting ways to get the students moving, engaged, and having fun!
How do you plan to make this Play last during the school year and beyond?
We plan on making this Play last for the rest of the school year and beyond because we never treated it as something with an expiration date. We will continue dropping by classes and providing them with a much needed break through some indoor recess. It doesn’t take long and we feel that it helps students stay focused after getting a few minutes to cut loose, which helps the teachers as well. We also plan on incorporating it through after school activities and summer programs as well.
