Community Involvement

The third grade Brown Elementary students have joined forces with 25 students from the University of Illinois kinesiology program during physical education class every Friday! The mentoring program provides the students at Brown leadership skills that will help improve their knowledge in regards to nutrition and how to be fit for a lifelong goal. At the end of the program, the students will be able to reach out into their own communities, teaching friends, community members, and family how to be more healthy. This image shows a MyPlate activity in which the mentors explain to the students about alternative healthy choices that the students can put on their plates during breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

How did students and adults work together as a team?

The mentors and students worked together not only during a presentation but a MyPlate activity as well. The students were engaged and answering direct questions that the mentors asked in a small and large group.

How did you accomplish your goals?

The students accomplished their goals by creating a healthy plate of food at the end of the lesson. The UIC mentors graded the healthy choices and provided written feedback on each plate.

How do you plan to make this Play last during the school year and beyond?

The program began 5 weeks ago and will continue until the end of the year! Thank you, Fuel Up to Play 60 and the mentors at UIC. We are changing the lives of so many one step at a time!
