Burleson Vikings learn to Fuel Up to Play 60

The Burleson Vikings had a great Fuel Up to Play 60 year. In addition to daily PE, breakfast in the classrooms, and healthy lunches in our Eat Smart Cafe, teachers were encouraged to take brain breaks every day and teach Coordinated School Health lessons in the classroom. In January the Burleson Fuel Up to Play 60 student team helped Nurse Miriam, Coach Lewis, and Coach Vaca with the big Kickoff event in every PE class. Nurse Miriam presented a power point on healthy eating using materials from myplate.gov and another power point on the importance of playing hard/exercising as least 60 minutes every day. The students then received a My Plate flyer and signed the Fuel Up to Play 60 pledge poster. In February the students had an opportunity to share their enthusiasm for physical activity with their families during a Wellness Walk in every PE class. We are planning another Wellness Walk in May.

How do you plan to make this Play last during the school year and beyond?

The concepts learned in our Fuel Up to Play 60 Kickoff event are reinforced in a variety of ways. Nutrition tips and reminders to Fuel Up to Play 60 are given during morning announcements. Coaches and teachers provide health lessons. Health news and the Fuel Up to Play 60 pledge poster is posted on the nurse's bulletin board.
