Ten students took a cooking class. They met once a week after school for 1.5 hours. It was taught by the Visiting Nurse Association. They had nutrition lessons for the 1st 45 minutes and cooked for the last 45 minutes. They ate what they cooked.
What challenges did you face and how did you overcome them?
I could only pick 12 students. They stayed later than other after school activities, so I had to pick students whose parents could pick them up after class. It made it difficult to get participants.
How do you plan to make this Play last during the school year and beyond?
We also had a Wellness Club the 3rd quarter that the same students could attend to continue their learning and see what they remembered. We added healthy snacks and exercise to the lessons.
What improvements have you seen at your school?
A parent told me her twins now say what food group their dinner fits in. Another student said he didn't like peppers, but was willing to try them. He found out he liked 2 or the 4 colors offered.
