Chipman Takes a Chomp

David Bolen,   Charles H. Chipman Elementary
Access to Healthy Foods, Community Involvement, Physical Activity Participation,  Student Leadership

Well Chipman Elementary is a Pre-K-1st Grade School, but we still took a huge chomp towards healthy living this year. Each class was able to do daily Brain Breaks through a variety of web sites and on their schedule. Every day all kids in the entire school were provided the opportunity to participate in a healthy breakfast in the classroom and a healthy snack, usually fresh fruits and vegetables, in the afternoon. We had a Cardio Club on Wednesdays which was attended by many of the Ambassadors so they were able to take the leadership role with their peers. We were able to have a local Martial Arts studio come to a Title I evening and provide a demonstration as well as walking many of the students through some of their "kicks".

How did you accomplish your goals?

I accomplished the goals by persistence. I kept after it even when it got tedious and stressful with some of the obstacles faced.

How did students and adults work together as a team?

Together Everyone Achieves More We were able to have fun establishing goals and then have fun as we set those in motion and let the school run with it.

How do you plan to make this Play last during the school year and beyond?

I plan on continuing the breakfast and the Healthy Snack programs by constantly communicating with the Food and Nutrition Director for our County's Schools of what I believe is a necessity that kids eat correctly and receive the education of what are healthy foods. I know he and I have the same vision for all of our students so I do not believe it will be an issue sustaining this for years to come.
