A couple days a week I like to give my students CHOICE days. It stands for Children Having Opportunities for Independent and Creative Exercise. This allows them the freedom to come up with their own games and movement forms, from dance to cheer to games with jump ropes, hula hoops and even cup-stacking games. The goal is to get them to have FUN playing, and giving them CHOICE helps them be in control.

How did students and adults work together as a team?

During CHOICE days, students independently form groups...that's the great thing! Inclusion in play has not been an issue. It has also helped curb some behavior issues that would normally arise.

What improvements have you seen at your school?

This year with an increased focus on nutrition education, I have had more students come up to me wanting to talk about what is healthy and what is not.

How do you plan to make this Play last during the school year and beyond?

Teachers have integrated energizers and physical activity breaks into daily classroom activities.
