Access to Healthy Foods, Physical Activity Participation
I am so proud of our students and staff here at Columbia. This year we've focused on classroom participation in our Fuel Up to Play 60 program. We've discussed and identified what are healthy snacks. Our staff sent home an appropriate list of these snack items to our families and encouraged students to bring these types of snacks to school. We also implemented Brain Breaks in class by using go noodle and cosmic yoga. Teachers have the choice to use any type of Brain Break for the kids. Get them up moving and provide them time to get the wiggles out.
In PE, Columbia's 4th and 5th graders participated in the NFL Play 60 Challenge. I learned a lot about student activities outside of school and it gave me ideas on how to help a certain population of students. My students finished in the top 10 nationally and we were finished first among the Seattle Seahawks team. We are very proud of them.
How did students and adults work together as a team?
My staff was very supportive in adding BrainBbreaks and healthy snacks into their classrooms.
How do you plan to make this Play last during the school year and beyond?
We will continue to participate in the Fuel Up to Play 60 challenge.
