Community Partnerships: U.S. Military Academy and West Point Elementary School

To help with our Fitnessgram testing, our Super Heroes from the Department of Physical Education (DPE at the United States Military Academy) volunteered to assess our students push ups and curl ups. The instructors were exemplary models of physical fitness. They were experts on how to do the assessment and encouraging when the children tried them. The students also learned how to boulder on our rock wall with expert instruction from Ms. Sue Klingerman, also from DPE. In the month of April, we will be joining the Corp of Cadets in an attempt to break the Guinness Book of Records of the largest group ever to perform a simultaneous cartwheel. This is being sponsored by the Army Gymnastics team, just prior to the Division 1 Gymnastics Championship being held at West Point, N.Y. Our students will be making a video to encourage other students to turn a cartwheel with the team on Thursday, April 20th. Lastly, on May 1st the Army Soccer team will be hosting a clinic for students interested in learning the game. This is our second year partnering with them and is a Community Event that the students voted to do again.

What improvements have you seen at your school?

The improvements over the last three years helped to create a culture of being physically active and eating healthy food is who we are as a school. Students are proud of their participation in Marathon Clubs, helping to break the Guinness Book of Records simultaneous cartwheel record and learning soccer from Cadets. I am happy to report I have a strong group of 4th grade students who attended a Fuel Up to Play 60 event in Albany last December that served to inspire our school.
