Community Walk-A-Thon

Our student Ambassadors put on a community walk-a-thon and zumba-a-thon for our school district community. Our 14 square miles of excellence participated in large numbers with over 150 participants. A community sponsor gave out water bottles, active apparel, footballs, soccer balls, volleyballs, bikes and other activities to promote an active lifestyle. The zumba-a-thon that was also going on had 50+ participants that had smiles and fun. It was a very successful and joyous event for all participants.

How did students and adults work together as a team?

Our students and sponsors worked to promote the event for two months, working together to build a plan and execute their idea. Utilizing three locations in the surrounding area, two local workout gyms and sporting goods store, to pass out fliers. They gave fliers out around the school and surrounding elementary and middle schools as well. They also began a question of the day activity, which was read over the intercom in the morning, with free items during lunch to the correct answer givers.

How did you accomplish your goals?

We accomplished our goal of having at least 100 participants and surpassed it with 176 participants. Our goal was to promote awareness of exercise and Zumba to many who had never tried it before.

What improvements have you seen at your school?

Countless individuals have asked when and if we will be hosting another event. Many students, teachers and staff members participated and really enjoyed themselves. The district has a monthly Zumba instructor offer free courses at various campuses to keep the movement going.
