Dairy Farmer and Cow Visited Our School

We decided to implement two Healthy Eating Plays at Jouett ES. The alternative breakfast has led to an increase in participation and therefore an increase in milk and yogurt consumption. We also implemented the Farm to School Play in two ways. We started a school garden that is used to educate students about agriculture and provides foods for taste testing. The students and staff also enjoyed the dairy portion of our Farm to School initiatives with a visit from a local dairy farmer. The farmer brought a cow and met with each class for about 20 minutes to share about the importance of farming and how farmers care for their animals and land. Both students and staff learned a lot about dairy farming and dairy foods that day.

What improvements have you seen at your school?

The students are eating healthier thanks to the increased access to healthy foods (alternative breakfast) and are more aware of how to grow and eat a wider variety of healthy foods (school garden).
