Our healthy eating Play for this year is: Breakfast for Everyone-First Meal Matters. The Fuel Up To Play 60 Ambassadors and I took this opportunity to explore healthy forms of dairy that can be had for breakfast. Milk was the first and most abundant response that the students gave when it came time to having dairy for breakfast; however the challenge was to have something different than milk. We discussed the foods (cheese, ice cream, yogurt, butter, cottage cheese) that contain dairy and decided on yogurt. Along with our vanilla yogurt, we also had blueberries, strawberries, bananas, and granola. During our breakfast we talked about the nutrients like calcium, potassium, vitamin D and protein that are contained in dairy. We concluded that the nutrients in dairy provide health benefits like strong bones, teeth and protein for our muscles. The students enjoyed their breakfast, each other’s company and were looking forward to more.

How did students and adults work together as a team?

Students and adults worked together on gathering information on dairy. Each student was tasked with making a list of either nutrients found in dairy or health benefits of dairy.

What improvements have you seen at your school?

Improvements I have noticed since have been an increase in student interest in dairy/yogurt. Students continue to ask when the next breakfast will be.
