Dance Break

Every year the 5th graders play volleyball against the teachers. This is fun for the kids playing and also fun for the kids to watch for about 10 minutes. This is not as good when you have 80 kids rotating in and a game that last about 60 min. C on my team mentioned that we should have some sort of break during the game to get kids up and moving. They came up with the idea and sold it to our principal that we should do a 2 min. dance break every 10 min. and allow the kids to dance during to music during the player switch. It turned out to be a great time. The kids were more engaged in the game and the teachers had a lot of fun with it also.

What challenges did you face and how did you overcome them?

The biggest challenge was having the kids work together to create a plan. Make the presentation to our principal. Convince her that it would help during assemblies and other times that the kids have to sit for long periods in the gym.

How do you plan to make this Play last during the school year and beyond?

We now have music on when they come in. We give dance breaks and many teachers have taken to giving quick 2 min. dance breaks during their class time when they see the kids losing focus.
