Dixon Intermediate Walking into The Healthiest Year!
On September 18th, 540 students and family members came out to S.S. Dixon Intermediate for our annual Fitness Night. This night was the kickoff event for our Physical Activity Play of Walk This Way…Walking/Running Club. It was a fun-filled evening of physical activity as the students along with their family members walked and/or ran their inaugural mile of the year on our country mile track. The students received their first toe token for doing so, then enjoyed various fitness activities, including Crossfit obstacle courses and fitness stations provided by a local Crossfit gym. In addition to getting physical, students were able to sign up for Fuel Up to Play 60 accounts and show their parents what this great program is all about. This was a wonderful evening to kick off a year of getting fit by walking and running. We will continue the momentum with our weekly Walking/Running Club as well as our 3nd annual Kids Marathon in the spring. Our kickoff event grows larger each year, which in turn increases our running club membership and marathon participation each year. We expect 2018-2019 to be our best and healthiest year yet!

What challenges did you face and how did you overcome them?

The weather looked to be an issue, as we had a torrential downpour just a few hours prior. We pulled together as a team and dried up as many areas as we could with a blower, and right before the event the sun came back out to help us out as well. When the event started, it was actually a VERY pleasant evening, which is unusual in Florida for September. The rain cooled it off enough to be enjoyable for all.
