Dodgeball Why its Worth It

Each morning we play dodge ball, and students are excited. They start their day with 30 minutes of running, jumping and throwing. The other day a student told me he only comes to school because he wants to play dodge ball. I am not sure if it's true or not, but it was nice to hear.

How did students and adults work together as a team?

Students take care of the equipment, help make purchases and enforce the rules. I just have to show up. Other staff members are using dodgeball as an incentive and they are allowed to play at different times during the day. Its part of our culture.

What improvements have you seen at your school?

Kids seem happier. They have time to play without be overly organized, there are few rules and socio economic standing has no bearing.

How do you plan to make this Play last during the school year and beyond?

We save the dodgeballs from year to year and try to make them last as long as possible. Other staff have stepped up and are helping. It is definitely part of our school.
