Access to Healthy Foods, Community Involvement, Student Leadership
Our school has had a backpack program for several years. This year, we have expanded our program to include fresh fruits, vegetables and dairy. Through our Fuel Up to Play 60 funds awarded last year, we purchased coolers that students could use to transport perishable foods home. We have partnered with Good Shepherd Food Bank and they are able to deliver hundreds of pounds of produce to our school twice a month. We now are able to get yogurt and cheeses on a regular basis. This February, we also partnered with Oakhurst to deliver half gallons of fresh milk once a month to our families on our backpack program.
Our school also started a Jobs for Maine Graduates Program at the middle school level this year. These students have become leaders in this program. Twice a month, a group of students stay after school to prepare boxes of food to distribute to the families of our program. The students take pride in this project and have contributed to the success.
How do you plan to make this Play last during the school year and beyond?
Thanks to our other partnerships with Good Shepherd and Oakhurst, this program is funded for several years to come.
