Eagles FUTP 60!!
- Yasnay Tapanes, Miami Springs Middle School
- Access to Healthy Foods, Physical Activity Participation, Success with Funds, Teamwork, Other
Our school is in its first year of the FUTP 60 program and since it has started there have been many positive changes in our school environment. Our biggest success with the program has been obtaining resources through the FUTP 60 funding to help expand physical activities and healthy eating. Our school offered a range of non-competitive physical activity opportunities aimed at engaging in fun, recreational and life-long learning opportunities before and after the school day. In addition, our school has promoted safe biking to school by providing storage facilities for bicycles and helmets. Applying for the grant has helped to provide our students with a variety of food during breakfast. We offered at least three different fruits and only nonfat or low-fat fluid milk each day. The students were very engaged in deciding what foods and beverages are offered. Our FUTP 60 student team promoted the benefits of getting the recommended amount of 60 minutes of daily physical activity to students with posters, banners and messaging throughout the school on an ongoing basis. Our Eagles Play 60!! Thank you to dairy farmers and Dairy Council of Florida for this amazing opportunity for our school community!!
