We got together with parents to help push healthy eating, especially when they send snacks with the kids to eat with lunch. We saw a lot of kids eating salty/fatty snacks during their lunch period. We got together with the parents during a PTO meeting and brought them up to speed on the future of health in the young kids if they continue to eat unhealthy, fatty foods. We stressed the epidemic of diabetes in the lower Rio Grande Valley and what we can do now to help fight that battle long term. With the help of parents and staff members, we were able to push the importance of eating healthy through bulletin boards, morning announcements and class activities. Together we can all make a difference.
How did students and adults work together as a team?
By spreading the word of healthy eating and making better decisions when grabbing snacks
What challenges did you face and how did you overcome them?
It's hard to get a young child to opt out of eating chips, compared to eating an orange.
How did you accomplish your goals?
By using the parents to help push the need at home. There's so much we can do at school but with the parents help, it made it even better
