Our FUTP 60 committee is encouraging students to eat their fruits and vegetables daily by holding a raffle at the end of each month for students they witness eating fruits and vegetables at lunch. Several students were seen only putting a slice of pizza or the main entree on their trays and not choosing any fruits or vegetables. They must be eating them as well, not sitting on the tray. The amount of fruits and vegetable being consumed has increased and we know that students are attempting to make better choices at lunchtime.

What improvements have you seen at your school?

More fruits and vegetables are being consumed. Our district chef is presenting various choices of each to encourage students to try other fruits and vegetables. We have noticed better lunch choices coming from home as well.

How did students and adults work together as a team?

Our student committee came up with the idea last year as they witnessed some students choosing not to eat lunch at school or they saw only one item on the trays when our food service has an a la carte and features many choices of fruits/vegetables.

What challenges did you face and how did you overcome them?

We were concerned about students just putting the fruit and vegetable on the tray and then throwing it away, so we said they must be witnessed eating the items.
